Pretty Flowers or A Big Bouquet of Trouble?
Spring and summer bring new growth, and unfortunately, that includes weeds. There’s a huge variety of weeds in Brisbane and Queensland, so you can expect at least a few of them to pop up in your garden. Weeds are pretty sneaky; they take resources away from the plants you actually want and can hog up space, too.
They’re known for spreading like wildfire and can quickly choke out the plants you originally planted. Weeds are incredibly tough and thrive on neglect, so if you leave your garden unattended for a bit, you might end up with a beautiful weed garden full of invasive and potentially harmful plants. If that’s not your goal, it’s time to start scouting for those little invaders and getting rid of them!
Removing weeds is easy on a small scale, but if you have a large area that hasn’t been looked after, it can be a bigger challenge. Bringing in an expert to tackle your garden or the gardens in your community can help keep those weeds in check and make sure you have a safe, green space for kids, dogs, and yourself to enjoy!
Did you know that while Lantana may look like a charming shrub with its pretty flowers, it’s actually considered one of the worst weeds in Australia? In fact, they are so invasive and tough to get rid of that the most common advice for tackling this weed is to literally kill it with fire… or consult your favourite arborist! These plants can grow into dense thickets that are hard to manage, and the biggest worry is stopping the spread of their seeds. It produces thousands of seeds that can easily spread through animals, birds, or even the wind!
Identifying weeds can be tricky, but luckily, the Brisbane City Council offers a handy Identification Guide to help you out. Just remember, a plant’s beauty doesn’t always mean it’s safe! The Queensland Poisons Information Centre has a great guide on plants that can be skin irritants or toxic, and many of these plants would look lovely in a garden. It’s always good to do a little research before planting!
These may look pretty, but they’re actually a big bouquet of trouble!
Weeds can be dangerous, but they’re also pretty fascinating! Some of them are completely non-toxic and even edible. The Brisbane Sustainability Agency has a fantastic guide to edible weeds that you should definitely check out! Just be careful, as many weeds can look quite similar, and you definitely don’t want to accidentally munch on something poisonous. Always make sure you know what you’re picking!
Getting rid of weeds in your garden is crucial for protecting native species, the land, and even your kids and pets. I’d be happy to help you eliminate those invasive weeds for good! Plus, I can point out any weeds you might not even realise are weeds.
