Eco Tree Services VS. Power Lines
We often get asked about how we handle power lines and tree maintenance. We get it, it’s a risky business and trees anywhere near power lines need to be watched and babied because they can cause serious issues, seriously fast.
Trees tall enough to reach power lines are tall enough to cause havoc. The slightest wind could blow branches or leaves against power lines and cause electrical hazards, power supply interruptions or electrocutions. Something we have certainly observed during recent weather events in South-East Queensland.
No, we have huge storms and hectic winds, it’s all very dramatic. This means however that the likelihood of big, scary weather causing branches to hit power lines increases for us in general, but especially before storm season. Severe weather can even cause branches to be blown off trees and fall, crushing whatever was below them.
The very simplest way to avoid damage or interrupted power is to keep an eye on trees or vegetation close to power lines, and make sure that it doesn’t become an issue. But how do you know if it’s going to cause a problem?
Well, for that, Energex and Eco Tree Services are here to help! Energex is where you report any trees, or vegetation growing too close to power lines by calling them on 13 12 53, reporting them is so important to protect your neighbours and yourself.
If your trees are growing too close to, or brushing a service line which connects power to your home, you call us and we’ll handle getting them safe again.
The threat of electrocution is a real one, severe weather can cause damage and power outages, but because electricity can pass through trees when branches or foliage touch overhead power lines, they could also facilitate potentially deadly electrical shocks. Life threatening amounts of voltage could also be present in the base of trees in contact with power lines. Either way, this is not what you want.
If you want to plant trees and would like to do so safely, Energex has a few helpful guidelines for you.
A good rule of thumb is to use a 1:1 area for planting, so if your tree will become 5m tall, plant it at least 5m away from power lines. You can plant small trees about 3m away from power poles and shrubs about 1m inside the curb where the council footway is at least 4m wide. You also need to consider the spread of the branches though, and allow for a 2m gap between the service wire and your home and the height your tree will grow.
Here’s a handy visual of that 1:1 rule.
We’re here to help. If you’re concerned about your trees being too close, get in touch and we’ll get them sorted so they’re safe. If you just want us to have a look, we’ll do that too!
