Eco-Friendly Tree Care: Sustainable Practices for a Greener Brisbane

Trees are essential; without them, there would be no fresh oxygen. There would be an overwhelming amount of CO₂ and we would have no fruit or any of the food that comes from trees and any animal, insect, bird, or other living thing that requires trees to live would also soon die off.

Looking after trees properly is paramount. Adopting eco-friendly and sustainable tree care methods and pruning techniques is necessary to keep our trees healthy, happy, and supporting the rest of us.

Eco-friendly tree care methods aim to minimize the impact on the environment by using less water or recycled water, organic and ethically sourced products that are produced in an environmentally friendly fashion, and careful pruning techniques.

If you’re introducing new trees or saplings, consider native species as their indigenous nature means they will have a much easier time adapting to the environment they’ve been placed in and are designed to flourish in the weather and soil conditions of the area. Choosing native species also saves on water consumption as trees native to Oz will require less water than trees native to the UK, for example.

Using organic fertilizer made from food scraps and chemical-free pesticides will also lessen your impact on the earth and be better overall for the health of the tree. It’s a similar concept to you eating only farm-fresh food instead of synthetic, over-processed junk food. While we’re on this topic, did you know that well-nourished trees are better able to fight off invading pests like borer beetles? Fascinating!

Mulching is also a good way to save on water. This is because the layer of mulch holds the water in the soil and makes it more difficult for water to evaporate during the heat. Only watering your trees in the evening will help too, as they then have hours to absorb the water without having to contend with the heat of the sun, meaning you can water them less often as they will absorb much more of the water you give them.

Neem oil, diatomaceous earth, garlic spray, or chili oil spray work as chemical-free, natural pesticides too, but do remember that for the food-based options to test the mixture on a small area of your tree before committing to the whole tree to see if there are any adverse effects.

Looking after your trees in a sustainable way that is light on the earth is necessary to keep your trees healthy and happy, while not harming the rest of your local insects.
