Give Your Trees A Little Attention Before Winter

Most people only think about their trees when something goes wrong. A branch drops, a storm hits, or a tree suddenly starts looking unhealthy. By then, the damage is often already done. As we move into Autumn, it becomes the ideal time to get ahead of any tree problems and prepare your trees properly for winter.

As the weather begins to cool, tree growth begins to slow down, and your trees get ready to rest after a long season of growing and producing fruit, flowers, leaves, and seeds. This makes April and May a great window for tree maintenance, because trees are less stressed and respond better to pruning and care. Taking a proactive approach now can reduce the risk of unhealthy trees, storm damage, disease, and expensive removals later on.

One of the first things to look at is preventative pruning. This always-essential part of maintenance refers to removing dead, damaged, or weak branches and helps reduce the overall weight and wind resistance of the tree. This is especially important after the summer storm season, when hidden damage may not be obvious at first glance.

A qualified arborist can carry out targeted pruning that improves the structure without harming the tree’s long-term health.

A proper tree health check is also important. This includes inspecting for signs of decay, pest activity, or structural weaknesses. Early detection is key when it comes to winter tree care. Cool conditions can slow recovery if left untreated. Things like cracks in the trunk, discoloured leaves, or fungal growth around the base should never be ignored, or “dealt with later on,” as they can turn into long-term issues.

Soil conditions also play a much bigger role than many people realise. Healthy, nutrient-rich soil supports strong root systems, which are essential for tree stability and nutrient uptake. Adding plant food and mulch around the base of your trees can help regulate soil temperature, retain moisture, and rejuvenate overall soil quality. Properly feeding your trees, which happens through their soil, will make them strong enough to build immunity to common pests like borer beetles.

Your watering habits may also need to change as the seasons change. While Brisbane winters are generally mild, rainfall patterns can vary, meaning your trees may need more or less water, depending on the rain. Keeping soil consistently moist, without drowning or drying it out, helps trees stay resilient during cooler months.

Essentially, your trees require a little TLC to keep them healthy and happy, which includes feeding, watering, and general tree hygiene.

For property owners, body corporates and developers, Autumn is also ideal to plan any larger work such as tree removal or block clearing. Conditions are more stable, and scheduling is often easier compared to the peak storm season.

Preparing your trees for winter doesn’t require anything significant. You just need to gentle them a little. A bit of attention now can prevent bigger issues later on.
