Palm Cleaning for the Festive Season
It’s a Christmas tradition, the backyard barbecue, the slip-n-slide, and the influx of visiting relatives. Unlike the Northern hemisphere, where Santa lands on a snowy roof, here the sleigh usually pulls up next to a sparkling swimming pool, and the reindeer are probably seeking desperately needed shade under a big, leafy canopy. If your yard is home to a few towering palms, the lead-up to Christmas is the perfect time to give them a thorough and probably necessary cleaning.
To the untrained eye, those big, brown, hanging fronds are just part of a palm tree’s charm. But we, as arborists, see them as three things: a potential fire hazard, a safety risk, and a five-star hotel for unwanted guests.
Those dead, dry palm fronds, often referred to as “skirts,” are highly flammable. During our hot summers, they are essentially fuel waiting for a spark. That spark could come from anything, a poorly aimed firework, a barbecue gone wrong, or simply a stray ember. Reducing this fire risk is critical, especially when the family is gathered and focused on celebrating rather than fire safety. Also, if you’ve got the barbie going, you might not notice the smell of burning or the smoke until it’s much too late.
Secondly, those dead palm skirts make lovely cosy homes for all sorts of wildlife, think rats, snakes, possums, and plenty of large, noisy insects which could be surprising if they catch you unawares. Imagine your v visiting family, sipping a well-deserved drink, when a grumpy goanna or a ressed-out snake drops out of a dead palm skirt and into the backyard cricket pitch. That’s a Christmas story better left untold, and it usually ends with someone needing a new pair of pants or a trip to the emergency room.
Our advice is to get ahead of the game. Professional palm cleaning involves removing all dead or dying fronds, old seed pods, and that unsightly, loose fibre from the trunk. It’s a meticulous tropical tree haircut, clearing out all the rubbish the tree no longer needs. This process immediately tidies up your yard for guests, improves the palm’s overall appearance, and drastically reduces the risk of falling debris in the middle of your backyard celebration. It also makes your home much less attractive option to the local wildlife looking for a quiet, dry, and protected spot to hibernate during the festive chaos.
Remember, palm cleaning can be tricky and seriously dangerous, especially on taller trees. Those old fronds are heavy, sharp, and require proper safety gear and training to remove without injury. Leave the climbing and handling of your palm trees to us!
