The Trees Brisbane Homeowners Regret Planting

Planting a tree is one of the best things you can do for your property. It adds shade, attracts wildlife, improves street appeal, and can even increase your home’s value. But choosing the wrong tree? That’s a mistake that can follow you for decades.

As arborists, we’ve met plenty of homeowners who tell us, “If I’d known it was going to get this big, I never would’ve planted it.” This is a common opinion and is why research is so important to do before you plant a tree.

There are also many of the problem trees we deal with that were planted years earlier when someone picked a tree based on how it looked in a nursery, not how it would behave once fully grown.

Here are a few of the most common reasons people end up regretting their choice.

Too Close to the House

A small sapling can look perfectly placed beside a home, but fast forward 15 years and those branches are scraping the roof, blocking gutters and dropping leaves everywhere.

Some trees also develop extensive root systems that can lift paving, damage retaining walls or interfere with underground pipes if they’re planted too close to buildings.

Too Big for the Block

Not every Brisbane backyard is built for a towering Gum Tree. Large species need room to spread both above and below the ground.

A tree that eventually reaches 20 or 30 metres might provide wonderful shade, but it can also dominate a small yard, reduce sunlight, create ongoing maintenance and become expensive to prune safely.

Messy Trees

Some species seem determined to keep homeowners busy every weekend. Leaves, flowers, seed pods, fruit and sticky sap can quickly turn a beautiful tree into a constant clean-up job.

Blocked gutters, slippery pathways and stained driveways are common complaints, especially during Brisbane’s storm season.

Aggressive Roots

Certain trees have roots that actively search for moisture. If water pipes, drains or old plumbing are nearby, roots can find their way in and create problems that are anything but cheap to repair.

Choosing the right species for the available space is far easier than fixing root damage years later.

The Wrong Tree for Brisbane

Some ornamental trees simply struggle with our climate. Brisbane’s hot summers, heavy rain and humid conditions can place a lot of stress on species that aren’t suited to subtropical weather.

A tree that’s constantly stressed is often more susceptible to pests, disease and poor growth.

Plan for the Future

The best time to think about the size of a tree is before you plant it.

Consider how tall and wide it will become, how close it is to structures, what sort of maintenance it will need and whether it’s suited to your local conditions.

A little planning now can save years of pruning, expensive repairs and, in some cases, complete tree removal.
